"Dusty Ventures" (dustyventures)
02/03/2016 at 13:00 • Filed to: Song Showdown, Musiclopnik, Not Battle of the Covers | 4 | 59 |
Welcome to the newest variation of pointless Oppo song competitions, Song Showdown. The premise is simple, we take two good (or at least popular) variations of the same song and pit them head-to-head. Sometimes this means two covers, sometimes this means the cover vs the original, hell even electric vs acoustic and live vs studio is fair game.
For our opening round we go to the well known
Metallica
Bob Seger classic “Turn the Page,” a song about the hardships of living on the road as a musician. If your over 20 years old it’s a virtual guarantee you’ve heard at least one of these two versions. But which is better?
Bob Seger (1973)
Metallica (1998)
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Feel free to post suggestions for future battles. I can tell you now that round two is already planned, and it will make Gamecat cry.

I love listening to Metallica’s cover. With the sound cranked way, way up.

I really do like both versions, but I have to vote Seger on this one.

Bob Seger, hand’s down. And it’s not even close.
Two for the future:
Hurt- NIN vs Johnny Cash
Take on Me- ah-ha vs Reel Big Fish

Bob shoots Hetfield with a silver bullet on this one, no contest.
Future: Higher Ground, Stevie Wonder vs Chili Peppers. Correct answer is Stevie Wonder.

I’m not really a fan of either performer, but I do like this song. I’d go with the Bob Seger version of the song, but the Jonas Akerlund video for the Metallica version is jarring and provocative. Be warned, for those who haven’t seen it it’s a sexually graphic description of a woman who works as a stripper and a prostitute while raising a little girl and gives a horrifyingly real portrayal of the sexual abuse these women face. It’s very NSFW.
BmanUltima's car still hasn't been fixed yet, he'll get on it tomorrow, honest.

Bob Seger, no contest.
My suggestion is Caravan first the original by Duke Ellington, vs the one by the Mills Brothers.

I’m going against popular wisdom and prefer the cover. Seiger definitely has the better voice and feeling, but the music and especially the guitar solo make the Metallica version much more dynamic and interesting song. The original sounds like a lounge act after listening to the cover.
Bob’s a great dude though.

Now I’m really concerned. This is going to try to prove that Tiga’s version of Down In It is the superior version isn’t it? Or that Linkin Park’s cover of Wish is better.
I for one, think that the better choice (better even than the inevitable Hurt comparo), would be Get Down Make Love. =)

Gonna have to put this on a driving disk. Got a job 500 miles away from here down in Alberta, I’ll be going on Sundays and home in the middle of the night on Friday.
Gonna be some lonely roads. I remember the last time I came that way, I only saw another vehicle every 10-20 minutes or so. Very isolated in between Prince George and McBride.

maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan all you people on here must have grey ball hair. Seger’s version is boring as hell and he can’t even lip sync in that video. Metallica took this easy listening crap and made it something worth listening too.

Metallica spiced it up just right, IMO. Not really a fair comparison, since Seger had to do all the hard work of writing the words and music. But I still like to play along.

Those are two pretty good covers but the rest of Garage Inc is passable.

Behind Blue Eyes - The Who vs Limp Bizkit
Whiskey In The Jar - Dubliners vs Thin Lizzy vs Metallica
Over The Hills And Far Away - Gary Moore vs Nightwish
Come Together - The Beatles vs Michael Jackson

Suggestions:
Johnny cash’s version of rusty cage compared to the sound garden original, since everyone has already suggested hurt.
Anything off rage against the machine’s renegades album. Personal favorites include ghost of Tom joad (springstien), Maggie’s farm (dilan) or kill a man

I am always fascinated when big performers do covers. The results can be very cool. I don’t think Metallica’s version is intended to supplant Segar’s version. I think it is intended to compliment it. What I really enjoy is when covers are done for fun.

I didn’t mean it as a dig or to belittle your suggestions or anything, just as an observation that two of your suggestions (along with Turn the Page) were from Garage, Inc, which is in its entirety a cover album. Really anything from Garage, Inc would be good, and I’m sure I’ll be revisiting that album a few times (maybe Metallica’s Astronomy vs BOC’s Astronomy?)

time for me to get permaband but I don’t think their version of BBE is that bad, tbf I did grow up in that era so weren’t aware of The Who at the time even still I think Limp Bizkit’s version comes across as a little more powerful, granted the bit between 2:30-3:00 could do with being removed/redone as that section lets it down
